Alex Sipiagin – Reverberations – Jazz Adventure [Review]

This album isn’t something you’d hear tinkling in the background of a swanky hotel lobby or a chic hair salon. This is a sonic odyssey that commands your attention. Welcome to Reverberations by Alex Sipiagin.

Conceived in the picturesque setting of Bassano del Grappa, Italy, Reverberations marks a significant moment in Sipiagin’s journey through jazz. Flanked by some big names in the industry, Sipiagin presents a collection of original works and interpretations of jazz classics, each one echoing his maturing artistry and daring exploration of the genre.

Sipiagin leads a formidable ensemble encompassing the saxophone, piano, bass, drums, and, of course, his virtuosic trumpet playing. The recording leans into the palpable, live energy of the performance, encapsulating the intense interaction among the musicians. The sound is rich, detailed, beckoning the listener into a deep and focused sonic journey.

Standout tracks include ‘Sipa Tham,’ a powerful opener packed with surprising twists and turns, anchored by a robust brass foundation. We move then into ‘Mish-Match,’ a piece that brilliantly illustrates the band’s seamless dynamic interplay, marked by a delightful piano solo. Finally, ‘Blues on the Corner’ punches the ticket, redefining the notion of contemporary jazz blues through its gritty, sustained groove.

But this album is more than a catalog of pieces—it’s a story. Reverberations navigates the intricacies of modern jazz with emotional depth, exploring the delicate balancing act between innovation and tradition. It is a narrative about pushing boundaries whilst having respect for and acknowledging its roots.

Reverberations will appeal to the genuine jazz aficionado, those who relish a finely honed ensemble piece. This is not an album for the casual listener or those looking for background music for their next soiree. It rewards those who appreciate meticulously constructed compositions and unadulterated virtuosity in musical performance.

Reverberations is a must for patrons of the complete album experience. It provides a satisfying journey through sophisticated jazz landscapes designed to be enjoyed in its entirety.
